Find event and ticket information. 7/19 Celebrated Swiss National Day at Swiss embassy, Washington DC It's time again for our annual Swiss National Day celebration in the beautiful courtyard of the Galley O on H on Friday August 1st.There will be passed hors d'ouvres, action stations serving grilled sausages, raclette, fries and more. Stable DC is celebrating Switzerland and National Day with traditional Swiss food alongside beverage specials all weekend with brunch and Saturday night dinner. Swiss Tunes, including a live Alphorn performance by Mark Phillips on the patio throughout Sunday brunch, will accompany 1. August décor, so don't miss out! National Day speicals will be offered at Saturday and Sunday History of Swiss National Day Switzerland began marking its union in 1891. That year, leaders of the young Swiss state chose August 1 to honor a pact made in 1291 by mountain cantons. Early celebrations joined cantonal fairs with speeches and lights. Scholars found the Federal Charter from 1291 in old archives in 1758. The Embassy is pleased to host and participate in many events in and around Washington, D.C. that promote Switzerland and Swiss knowledge and culture. Switzerland celebrates its National Day on August 1, commemorating the signing of the Letter of Confederation of 1291. The Swiss traditionally celebrate this day with the lighting of bonfires, setting off fireworks, and participating at parades throughout the country with yodeling choirs, alphorns, and flag-throwers.
